What is Lasik?
LASIK or Laser In-situ Keratomileusis refers to the use of laser technology to reshape the cornea. This surgical procedure combines the use of the microkeratome which creates a partial flap in the cornea and the precision of the excimer laser which removes a thin layer of tissue from the cornea.

LASIK is performed in our Manassas office as an outpatient procedure. The actual surgery usually lasts less than 15 minutes, with most patients experiencing an improvement in their vision within the first few days of the procedure, some within hours of their treatment.

The Procedure
The eye is numbed with anesthetic eye drops. Then a microkeratome creates a partial flap in the cornea. The hinged flap is then folded back exposing the middle part of the cornea.

The computer-controlled excimer laser, having been preprogrammed for the patient's correction, is applied to the exposed corneal surface to remove a microthin layer of tissue.

In the final step, the flap is folded back into its original position. The treated area is completely covered by the flap.

Following the procedure, you will be given eye drops, protective sunglasses, and eye shields to help your eyes heal. By the next morning, your vision will be greatly improved. Your vision maybe slightly blurry for a few days, but most patients return to work within 48 hours.

About the Eye
Nearsightedness or myopia is a condition in which distant objects are blurry or even indistinguishable. This condition occurs if the eye is too long which causes the light rays entering the eye to focus in front of the retina.

Farsightedness or hyperopia is a condition in which distant objects are clear and close up objects appear blurry. This condition occurs when the eye is too short for the cornea's curvature and the light rays entering the eye focus on a point beyond the retina.

Astigmatism is a condition in which the cornea has an oval shape, rather than being perfectly round. This can cause both distant and near objects to be blurred and distorted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is LASIK?

A. LASIK is an acronym for LASer In-situ Keratomileusis which refers to the use of the excimer laser to reshape the cornea to correct a wide range of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Q. How long has LASIK been performed?

A. LASIK has been performed internationally for over 10 years. It was first performed in the U.S. in clinical trials in 1989. However, ophthalmologists have been reshaping the cornea for over 50 years, and using the excimer laser since the 1980's.

Q. How much does LASIK cost?

A. Generally, the procedure costs about $3200. This fee includes the screening consultation and examination, the surgery, and all follow-up visits for one year. Payment in full is due prior to surgery and can be paid by cash, check, or credit card. Financing plans are also available. You may apply quickly and securely via the web at http://www.carecredit.com or by calling 800/365-8295.

Q. Is LASIK covered by insurance?

A. Generally, it is not covered by insurance, but you need to check with your individual company.

Q. Does it hurt?

A. No, the actual excimer laser procedure does not hurt. Patients are given anesthetic eye drops to numb the eye. Some patients do experience discomfort for a few hours following the surgery.

Q. How long will I be off work after the surgery?

A. Most people return to work within one or two days; however, it depends on your occupation. If your job requires a great deal of reading or computer work, you might not have adequate vision to perform your normal tasks.

Q. Can I play sports after LASIK surgery?

A. Most normal activities can be resumed after surgery. However, for at least two weeks after surgery, you should avoid activities that would cause perspiration to run into the eyes. You should also wear safety glasses while playing contact sports and avoid swimming for several weeks.

Q. How long will it take before I can see well?

A. Most patients achieve good vision within a few hours of the surgery. However, vision can continue to improve, and best vision can take two to three months to occur.

Q. Will I still need reading glasses after LASIK surgery?

A. Most people in their 40s will need reading glasses. This condition, known as presbyopia, cannot currently be treated by surgery.
